Clifton talks to Perspective for his design insights

To Clifton, good design should tell a story, having an emotional impact on people. Clifton enjoys the creative process the most in being a designer, from transforming an idea from the source of inspiration to brainstorming, practical execution, and to completion. The groundwork to create a successful design in retail and residential projects is very similar – both calls for a thorough understanding of the clients and their needs. The new stylish racing and Hollywood-themed café – Jump at HKJC Shatin racecourse is Clifton’s most impressive one - making use of the super high ceiling, Clifton has created a circular food & beverage pick-up counter cum semi-open kitchen at the centre of the themed restaurant.

Home Makeover | Squarefoot Magazine | Nov 2017

Clifton shares his experience in transforming the 30-year-old flat into a contemporary home which flow is the key to the entire design.

When Clifton started on the flat, two elements sprung to the fore. First was the dim and slightly dated style of the previous owners, and second was the eventual presence of a child in the home.

From the main entry, the living and dining areas open up to the left and right, with bedrooms directly ahead. Separating the two were nonstructural walls that created an odd, mazelike back half to the flat.

The extra walls were removed, the en suite bathrooms were re-tooled and the dividing wall was transformed into a double-sided closet. Now the owner can go into the en suites more directly, there is a little foyer and the bathroom. This way you don’t see in the room right away. It provides a little more privacy. And with clothing acting as a default sound insulator, the wall isn’t missed. It saves a bit of space. It also creates better flow between the two rooms. There’s a connection between the two rooms with the floor and the wall finish, the marble that ties it all together. The dining chairs are from habitat; table from TREE; TV and speakers from B&O.

At first glance, the design is minimalist and open, giving it a homely and relaxing ambience, but dig deeper, and one can find the owner and his partner’s personality and sophisticated tastes stamped on it. To match with the owner’s taste for high design, many design-led and luxurious furniture pieces, such as the set of sofa seats ‘Extrasoft’ used in the basement facing the swimming pool designed by Piero Lissoni. The seats are versatile as they can be rearranged in infinite ways, suiting different needs. Another design-led piece is the curved Maxalto CRONO sofa in the master bedroom designed by Antonio Citterio. Not only is the curve design fashion forward, its colour matches the room’s décor and exudes a comfy feel, perfect for the owner and his partner to relax on. This relaxing theme extends to the AV room, where you can find two lounge chairs by Eames with a stylish, sleek and comfy design, for the owner, his partner or guests to lay back and enjoy a good movie.

Family Matters | HKEJ | July 2017

Just because you have a child entering your life does not mean that you have to give up on style. With the choice of right materials and sophisticated colour choices, we prove that practicality does not have to come at the expense of chic design. With a child and dog, it was not practical for the couple to use wooden furniture. But that did not mean they had to give up on stylish, warm pieces. Clifton opted for laminate covering from English brand Lamitak for all storage units, such as this grey one in the living room. Not only is the covering water resistant, it is also durable. Hence the couple need not worry about the dog scratching the surface or their son throwing toys at it. While many might balk at the choice of laminate coverings, often associated with sacrificing style for substance, Lamitak caters to design-conscious parents with its fabric-like, matt textures. The brand is also certified for its low emissions and low toxicity.

Designing for the Elderlies | Squarefoot Magazine | Sept 2017

An ageing population means the time has come to rethink design — both in renovation and from the ground up.

More than ever, people are becoming like fine wines: they’re getting better with age.

We’re living longer and living better than ever. While that’s wonderful, it’s a new source of stress for societies and public services. Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, Hong Kong is getting old, and the time has come for the SAR to think long and hard about housing its elderly population.

No place like home

Entry fees at Tanner Hill for rental privileges started at HK$1.8 million and ranged as high as HK$20 million. At those prices, and with Hong Kong’s strata titling, it made more sense among the silver set that currently owns property to simply revamp what they already owned. Seniors opting to stay in their homes, and owners in general, are looking to design to make their residences more senior-friendly for the long term. “A lot of my clients these days are more concerned about their futures. They’ll probably live in their home another 10 or 15 years and they’re approaching that age and the issues that go with it,” says Clifton Leung Design Workshop’s Leung. “They do want to renovate at this stage and we do get these requests more now.”

Elderly-friendly design elements can include non-slip textured floors, contrasting colours for ease of sight, softer materials like wood and carpets, rounded corners and ample turning space. Senior-positive design is quite specific, and “It does require a little renovation work. You can’t just add a few bars, but it is possible,” says Leung.

The non-profit Senior Citizen Home Safety Association (SCHSA) is one of the few currently advocating for senior-focused services and design safety (Leung designed their offices and community spaces), and conducts research on the subject. Its smart home pilot programme aims to empower seniors to age-in-place independently, safely and smartly. But Leung hasn’t heard any industry buzz about developers taking the long view or designing for the elderly.

Would Leung welcome something like CAPS or a specialty service within his own studio? “Yes, I would. A lot of people don’t know how to convert an apartment into a senior-friendly home. You need certain types of hardware and design code, specific measurements. There are a lot of considerations — and you need to understand each [client’s] lifestyle. It’s good service and a good market.”

An oasis in the city: Ideas to create a sanctuary in bustling Hong Kong

Often known as the city that never sleeps, Hong Kong’s hustle and bustle is something many of us have a love-hate relationship with. But those desiring tranquility need not sacrifice accessibility to the city’s downtown.

With the launch of new properties like AltaMira and Alassio in Midlevels, homebuyers are able to enjoy exclusivity and breathtaking views of the city just a stone’s throw from the bustling Central district. But the location is just part of the equation.

Here are some tips to decorate interiors to create a sanctuary in the heart of the metropolis.

Using a soothing colour scheme and natural materials are a good way to create a tranquil space.

For example, at this apartment in the Pavilia Hill development in Tai Hang, Clifton opted for soothing
hues of white, grey and green, creating a cozy and comfortable atmosphere for the couple to relax
after a long day at work.

In this apartment in Amber Garden in Kennedy Road, Mid-levels, earth tones is opted at the dining
room of with the cosy chairs from Habitat and dining table from TREE. The choice of the rustic
wooden dining table further invites the serene natural scenery into the home.

Another way to take pick the colour scheme is to take inspiration from the lush greenery outdoors,
especially if you are blessed with such breathtaking views.

In this Redhill Peninsula project in Tai Tam in the Southern district, Clifton decided to use light green
dining chairs from Forest, which echo the stunning mountain views outdoors. He also went with
natural materials of wood for the flooring and cabinets, giving the dining room a warm atmosphere.

Besides earth tones, natural light is another way to create a relaxing space and warm atmosphere for
the homeowners.

For example, with Clifton opting keep the ceiling-to-floor windows clear from furniture, a vast amount
of natural light can seep into this project in the Royalton development in Robinson Road, Midlevels,
creating a homely and spacious apartment.

With not many places offering the lush greenery in Midlevels, it would be a waste to just allow the
breathtaking views and natural light to enter the dining room. As such, Clifton proposed the use of a
semi-open kitchen with a sliding glass door, which allows occupants to also admire the beautiful
outdoor views from the kitchen.

Another way to play with lighting is to opt for a soft blue lighting such as this one at the bathroom of
this Babington House project in Midlevels.

Clifton explains that the colour as well as the fact that it is an indirect lighting creates a muted, spa-like mood for occupants to relax after a long day at work.

With the lack of public space at home, it is often easier to feel stressed. So keeping your home spacious with a minimalist design is another way to create a relaxing space.

This can be exemplified in this apartment at Baguio Villa in Pokfulam. With the use of an open kitchen with a minimalist island, cabinets and stools as well as a living room featuring signature pieces such as a simple yet sleek sofa and coffee table from habitat and indigo respectively, owners are able to escape the fast-paced, crowded environment outdoors.

Another perk of having a minimalist design is that it acts as a “gallery” for art pieces. For some people, artworks have the effects of healing, so why not try adding signature pieces that speak to you in your living space.

The simple design of this study room of Babington House project allows this vivid Marcel Desbiens art piece to shine.

Likewise, the minimalist design in the dining room of the Baguio Villa project draws owners and guests attention to this colourful painting Nguyen Minh Son, a contemporary Asian artist from Vietnam.

Retail Branding | InsideRetail | Jul 2017

These are words that describe Siemen’s brand’s central values - building on a rich legacy of German engineering mastery, industry leadership and inventiveness. When life and technology unite, it offers you the freedom to fully embrace and engage in the world around you. Clifton’s challenge was to reflect those core brand values and the brand personality in a compact space. Retail design is not just making a store look appealing, but about positioning a brand. So Clifton always invests time in understanding the brand’s DNA before he starts work on a store concept.

Amber Garden - Luxury meets practicability

Knowing that the couple is art lovers, Clifton kept the design in the living room simple, so as to create a gallery-like space for them to display their art pieces.

The minimalist design of the living room is complemented by B&O sound systems.

With a young child who is still very active and curious about exploring the world, the couple wanted a room that engaged his senses. To do so, Clifton opted for a slide-and-bed combination set from Lifetime, which allows the child to enjoy the thrills of a playground, but at the safety of his home. Peek below the bed and you will find a space-saving storage unit, which trains the child to organize his books ad toys.  Lamitak covering is also used for the wardrobes, especially with the child likely to spend a lot of time playing in his room.

The minimal design of the master bedroom, featuring soothing tones of green, brown and grey, creates a cozy and comfortable atmosphere for the couple to relax after a long day at work and taking care of the child. Clifton made full use of the windowsill by creating a lounging area for the owners to read a book or just enjoy the views outside by padding the windowsill, and adding cushions and a throw. The cabinet is also covered with Lamitak.

Being the parents to an active child, the owners of this apartment do not have much time to themselves. As such, Clifton focused on creating a relaxing sanctuary for the couple in their bathroom—the only place they can be ‘escape’ from their child. Using light and earth tones, the bathroom is opened up given a tranquil touch. He also picked a B&O Play speaker, which not only provides soothing music for the owners, but also adds to the sleekness of the bathroom visually.

The kitchen is semi-open with a glass door, which allows more natural light to enter. Sleek appliances from MIele and Fisher and Paykel are complemented by a modern design, such as a unique wall feature in between cabinets created with New York subway-inspired tiles.

A warm mood is created in the dining room, with the use of a rustic wooden dining table from TREE. The table is complemented by cosy chairs from Habitat.

Visionary, refined, stylish and metropolitan living

“My inspirations were yummy food and home cooking, the brand’s core values of quality, performance and practical innovation and the brand’s image as ‘visionary, refined, stylish, metropolitan living’, and ‘invented for life’.” The design has perfectly captured the appliance brand’s personality in this warm, friendly space. While Clifton had to follow a design guideline issued by Bosch in Germany, specifying the centre sphere as the kitchen, a middle sphere for free-standing feature displays and an outer sphere for built-in product displays, he was able to develop the layout from this taking into consideration the shape and features of the site. Perhaps the biggest challenge he faced was working in a shell surrounded by ceiling-to-floor windows which limited the space available for storage and product displays. “Big windows mean there’s no space to display things. There’s not so much wall space.” To solve this problem he created three framed boxes that sit in front of the windows. They are spaced out to let natural light come in, while directing the customer’s attention to the appliances via the wooden frames around the boxes. A structural column in the middle of the site also had to be worked around – this challenge was solved by converting it into a round centrepiece incorporating display shelving and storage space.

Hong Kong Arts Month: home makeover ideas for art buffs

With the Hong Kong Arts Month coming up, events like Art Basel and Art Central are set to land in the city. Art lovers, are you inspired to add an aesthetic touch to your living space? Displays of art and favourite photos can help make a house feel more like a home. When living space is tight though, and walls are few you’ll want to be judicious about how it’s hanging.

If you’re a fan of contemporary art works, we suggest a minimalist décor so you can let your art piece take centre stage and be the conversation starter.

Choosing which part of the house to put your art work is important too. This clean and simple design allows Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans, one of the most famous pop art pieces in history, to shine. Choosing which part of the house to put your art work is important too. Here, Clifton cheekily placed the ‘soup cans’ in the kitchen, so that not only are your olfactory and gustatory senses tantalised, you can also have a feast for the eyes. For a more cohesive design, pick a colour from the art piece and add it to a piece of furniture. Here, the bar table features a whimsical pinkish red shade inspired by the bright and lively reds and pinks in the art work.

If your kitchen has dark tones and a minimalist design, liven it up with a colourful painting like this one. Despite having a traditional theme, the painting is modern and bright, with lots of colour, strokes and movement.

Check out more about this project: https://www.cliftonleungdesignworkshop.com/project-residential/healthy-garden-east-hk-island/

If you have a complex art piece like this one—the Aboriginal painting by Gloria Petyarre, we recommend keeping the layout open and furniture simple. Here, the sophisticated lines and movements of the art work can come through and not become too overbearing.

Check out more about this project: https://www.cliftonleungdesignworkshop.com/project-residential/babington-house-mid-levels/

The entrance area of your home is perfect for an art piece, which gives you and your guests a perk-me-up every time you walk into your living space. Complemented by only a small shelf designed by Clifton and a statement lamp from Flos, this atmospheric painting by Paul Kenton is allowed to shine and get you thinking. Inspired by the wing of a stealth fighter jet, the shelf is contemporary, matches the travel theme of the art work, and provides a convenient pick-up/drop-off place for small items.

Check out more about this project: https://www.cliftonleungdesignworkshop.com/project-residential/repulse-bay-garden-south-hk-island/

If you’re a fan of the classics and traditional art pieces, it’s important to make sure your décor goes with them, even their frames.

Here, the delicate flowers in the Chinese painting are brought out by displays with a Chinese theme, such as floral and bamboo displays, vases and an intricately designed tea set. Meanwhile, the wooden frame of the painting is complemented by the brown colour scheme of the furniture and flooring.

Check out more about this project: https://www.cliftonleungdesignworkshop.com/project-residential/hanking-court-a-east-hk-island/

Similarly, the traditional paintings here—including the framed painting and scroll—are incorporated into the living space with a Chinese-themed design, featuring shades of brown and Oriental ornaments, including tea pots, vases and a wooden screen.

If you don’t want your art pieces to be too conspicuous and in-your-face, make sure they are complemented by your room’s décor.

Check out more about this project: https://www.cliftonleungdesignworkshop.com/project-residential/constellation-cove-new-territories/

One way to do so is to consider wallpaper art. The hand-painted wallpaper fits seamlessly with the Victorian theme of this bedroom, with shades of gold and intricate designs.

Check out more about this project: https://www.cliftonleungdesignworkshop.com/project-residential/bel-air-residence-c/

The spirit of Ansel Adams’ photograph is brought out with this room’s black and grey colour scheme, featuring a wall with an industrial feel and a chic black lamp.

Check out more about this project: https://www.cliftonleungdesignworkshop.com/project-residential/formwell-garden/

For a touch of the tropics, consider matching textured and colourful floral paintings with wooden furnishings, plants and textured walls.

Check out more about this project: https://www.cliftonleungdesignworkshop.com/project-residential/leon-court-mid-levels/

Here, calming colours of the blue, purple, brown and white are extracted from the painting to into the furnishings and furniture of the bedroom, giving the bedroom tranquility and serenity.

If your art pieces are three-dimensional like figurines and ornaments, consider having a display shelf to showcase them. Here, a display shelf is designed to conceal a storage unit—perfect for space-starved Hong Kong apartments! With a light at the back of the display shelf, your experience of viewing your art pieces is enhanced. Here’s a tip, if you have a diverse range of art works, arrange them according to different themes. For example, here, the architectural pieces are put together here on the second compartment from the top and works by famous Taiwanese sculptor Ju Ming are grouped together in the middle compartment.

From a single man’s digs to a sleek bachelor pad

A big difference between a single man’s digs and a bachelor pad is the attitude its occupant. The former is home to a man who ended up single because he does not know how to use his personality to charm the ladies, or simply has given up on love, while the latter is for the one who is simply enjoying the life till he finds the love of his life.

The key to creating the perfect bachelor pad is to let your character shine through the apartment. But just pause for a moment if you’re thinking of Christian Grey’s pad in Fifty Shades of Grey. While it is certainly stylish, its overly luxurious feel can be intimidating to the ladies you invite over.

As such, balancing between style and an inviting mood is of utmost importance when it comes to designing the dream bachelor’s pad.

This apartment in Happy Valley exudes masculinity with raw finishes, including concrete flooring, a concrete bench that runs through the apartment, and industrial-style kitchen units, such as a stainless steel table designed by Clifton Leung Design Workshop and stainless-steel bar steels from Apartment. But to prevent it from being too cold and impersonal, Clifton balanced it with clever, indirect lighting, giving the apartment a warm atmosphere.Check out more about this project: http://www.houzz.com/projects/309370/yu-fung-building-an-open-concept-with-zero-walls

Drawing inspiration from a New York loft, this apartment in West Kowloon Cultural District brings out the character of its owner, a stylish man with refined tastes, through the use of state-of-the-art system and appliances, including kitchen appliances from Miele, audio equipment from Bang & Olufsen, refrigerator from Sub-Zero, rainshower from Gessi and bed from Hastens.

But to make sure the owner of this pad is not going to be a bachelor for long, Clifton added thoughtful small touches to the apartment so that ladies that come here will feel at home too. A “smart glass” is used for the partition between the bathroom and the rest of the apartment. Flick a switch and the partition turns opaque, giving the occupant and guests privacy.

Check out more about this project: http://www.houzz.com/projects/366473/the-harbourside-les-maisons

As a bachelor’s pad is only for one occupant, adopting a minimalist design and open layout is not only chic, but also practical. This apartment on Hong Kong Island charms with its simple colour scheme of brown, black and white. To prevent it from being too impersonal, Clifton opted for indirect lightning, giving the apartment a homely feel.

While an open layout is particularly suitable for the owner to invite friends over for gatherings, Clifton also installed sliding doors, giving the owner or guests staying over the option of privacy when needed.

High tech audio-visual can look too harsh, so for this apartment in Redhill Penninsula, Clifton softened the look by cleverly concealing the equipment, and complementing them with painting-like black and blue sound adsorption materials and blue LED ceiling lightning, which gives the apartment a relaxing and inviting atmosphere.Check out more about this project: http://www.houzz.com/projects/31367/red-hill-peninsula-an-unconventional-oasis-with-a-spark-of-color

Studio apartment: solution to space-starved Hong Kong flats

There is a Chinese saying that goes: “Even though a sparrow is small, but all its vital organs are present”. In design terms, a sparrow is a well-designed studio flat, which is functional and trendy, and meeting all the needs of its owner despite its small size.

To achieve this, there are three considerations—openness, flexibility and a minimalist design.

Knocking down all the walls might be a risky move to take, but with the right ideas and design, you can turn your apartment into a cosy and sleek pad.

Timeless elegance: white kitchen ideas that stand the test of time

Ideas for a white kitchen with a twist

Contemporary or classic: white kitchen ideas that match your personality

Many people might associate having a white colour scheme for your living space with being plain or boring, but with the right design, the subtle colour can turn your home into an open, minimalist and trendy space.

One of the best places to use a white colour scheme is your kitchen. In the words of award-winning designer Mick de Giulio: “White has stood the test of time because it’s clean and fresh.” He further explained: “And those two words — clean and fresh — are classic words for describing a great kitchen. There isn’t a better way to approach design.”

For many, the kitchen is the life of the home, where a family gathers to eat and share about their day. As such, it is important to have a kitchen that is bright and lively.

As the brightest colour, white reflects light, making even the smallest of kitchens seems spacious.

Besides the huge windows that bring abundant natural light and fresh air into this apartment, the ceiling skylight design creates an illusionary extension of the natural lighting, offering an inviting space with positive vibes for casual chatting with friends and family.

The skylight also serves as a centrepiece directly above the island, which is complemented by bar stools and bookshelves at the side, reflecting the warmth and cosiness of a home where owners can enjoy reading while having a cup of coffee.

Another way to make your kitchen brighter and livelier is with a semi-open kitchen like this one. Here, not only does natural light enter through the window, it also comes in from the living room via the opening between hanging cabinets and the island, making the kitchen more lively and spacious.

At the same time, the hanging cabinets ensure a certain degree of privacy for the user of the kitchen, while providing storage for kitchen tools, ingredients and utensils.

If you are worried about smoke from cooking entering the living room, considering having a semi-open kitchen like this one, which has movable glass panels, which help trap smoke within the kitchen.

By using a transparent sliding glass door, the gorgeous mountain view of the dining room is still visible when cooking or preparing food in the kitchen. The trees and plants evoke a restful, soothing and cheerful ambience.

Another plus point about white kitchens is that they go well with a minimalist design. But minimalism doesn’t mean boring.

If you like stainless steel appliances, a white kitchen is perfect for showcasing these kitchen tools, such as in the exhaust hood, sink accessories and pot in this kitchen. The tap is from Galaxy Bathroom.

By having a simple white colour scheme, you can play up the accents and details such as the black knobs and details on the cabinets in this kitchen. The countertop and units are designed by Clifton Leung Design Workshop.

If black, white and grey seem a bit boring to you, bring in colourful accessories, such as a plant in the kitchen above, or pots or even fruits in the kitchen below.

If you like flowers, you can even consider placing an Ikebana floral arrangement in your white kitchen, which adds and arty touch to your kitchen.

With a simple white colour scheme, you can bring in sharper details such as the cluster of copper lamps in this kitchen, which act character to your white kitchen.

Play with lighting for your white kitchen. In the following kitchens, indirect lighting creates layers, which make your kitchen chic, while not being too fanciful. It also creates a warm atmosphere, for the family to spend precious time together cooking or eating.

Work hard, play hard: Tips for designing your home office

With more and more people opting to work from home, study rooms and home offices are becoming an increasingly important part of a home’s décor. However, in Hong Kong, where space is at a premium, we often couldn’t afford to have a room freed up as a home office or study. Even if you somehow manage to squeeze some space out, you often end up with a claustrophobic, small home office, which might affect your thinking process, creativity or productivity.

Here are some innovative ways to come up with space and create a comfortable and inspiring study area.

Apartments in Hong Kong often come with layouts that are not the most conducive for furniture placement. Here’s an example of how we can turn a flaw into something useful. If your apartment has a diamond layout or corners with slanted corners, considering using these difficult to utilize areas to create a unique home office.

Here, an otherwise redundant part of the apartment is carved out to function as a study. Not only is it functional, the unique layout is aesthetically stimulating. The desk, overhead cupboards, and display case are designed by Clifton, while the chair and artwork from Ikea.

In this example, a white wall with the top made of glass is used to separate the study from the living room. The semi-permeability provides a certain degree of privacy for the user to concentrate, while staying connected with what is happening in the living room. The use of glass for the top of the wall also makes the study appear more open and less confined. A shelf that curves around the wall also adds to the continuity of space from the living room to the home office. The desk and hanging shelves are designed by Clifton, the ergonomic desk chair from Posh, and the plastic CD racks from Montparnasse.

As a study room is somewhere that is not too noisy, full privacy is not always required. Why not consider a glass door, which opens up the apartment and allows the room to be more connected to other rooms.

Here is an example of a two-in-one bedroom and study. The original wall is knocked down and replaced with a frosted glass door, opening up the space visually and functionally. The user in the home office can have a certain degree of privacy with the frosted glass, while staying connected to those in the bedroom.

Having the study next to the dining room is useful for parents as they can keep an eye on their children in the living and dining room. The chairs in this design are from Herman Miller.

If you or your spouse loves to cook or have to spend a lot of time preparing meals, consider situating the study room next to the kitchen. With a glass door, you and your lovebird can check in on each other every now and then, while having separate spaces to concentrate on your work. The use of a glass door also ensures the smoke and oil from cooking don’t enter the study, while opening up the space.

Staring at your computer for long hours can be straining on the eyes. Consider having a window in your home office, such as these designs, so you can look out and feel revitalised.
