Home interior design trends in 2022 | SCMP | Jan 2022
"That homes have needed to be abnormally multifunctional in the past year has better prepared us for what lies ahead, according to trend watchers.
Whether that means equipping a home office to be efficient as well as beautiful, comforting ourselves with colour and texture, or eschewing mass-produced homewares for sustainable alternatives, a more mindful approach to our living environment is the top interiors trend predicted for 2022."
French Cottage House Design | Home Journal | May 2021
This house at Fairview Park, situated at the tranquil northwest end of New Territories, is home to a couple, together with their dog and helper. It is love at first sight when the owners become aware of the house through visits to their family and relatives in Yuen Long, who live merely a short stroll away from the property. When they decide to purchase a weekend home, the house springs instantly to their mind.
“The design concept has a simple goal in mind: a cottage that doubles as a social space to entertain relatives and friends,” says Clifton Leung, Chief Designer of Clifton Leung Design Workshop, the design firm at the helm of the renovation.
A large private residential estate built in 1976 out in Yuen Long, Fairview Park is as close to true suburbia as one can get in Hong Kong. Its residents live in neatly arranged low-rise houses – each one complete with front and backyards. At some 20 years old, the property’s structure has never been touched before the couple buys it. To transform it into a modern French-style cottage home that makes the most of its picturesque hillside locale – as envisioned by the team – isn’t an easy task.
The team approaches it by first revamping the entire 1,000-sq. ft. 2-storey house. This includes gutting everything from the inside out – pipes, wiring, windows, etc – and redoing the layout. Perhaps most notably, the original three bedrooms on the first floor are converted into one continuous loft-like space comprised of the master bedroom, master bathroom and study room. The master bedroom leading directly into a corridor takes its cues from the open bathroom typically found in plush hotel rooms.

Home away from home: cosy and comfortable school designs to improve learning and wellbeing
Good design isn’t a privilege only for the art and design sector or those who can afford it. Innovative, aesthetic and functional design should be enjoyed by everyone. Where better to start promoting this spirit of good design than in schools, a place where many will spend their formative years.
Clifton Leung Design Workshop has been active in promoting good design among students for many years. The design firm even worked on a makeover project for a local secondary school to help improve its students’ learning and wellbeing.
Known for its focus on innovation and learning beyond classrooms, CCC Tam Lee Lai Fun Memorial Secondary School got in touch with Clifton a few years back when it decided to rejuvenate several spaces to inspire its students. While the public school, which is located in Tuen Mun, had a limited budget, Clifton was able to tap into his imagination to find cost-friendly ways to revamp the school.
One of the main features of the project is the Clifton Learning Commons, a room designed to support students’ after-school learning. In the space, students can revise their schoolwork, explore other interests and forms of learning, and also engage in discussions with other schoolmates. There is also a teacher on site to provide help when needed. In order to create a space that inspires students and one that they actually want to visit, Clifton came up with the idea of a more relaxed environment in the school setting. To do so, he focused on bringing the outdoors in.

Taking advantage of the large windows, which allowed a lot of natural light in, he introduced many green features. These include an artificial grass carpet running across the room, potted plants and a lot of recycled wood. While the carpet is made of artificial grass, it has the texture of real grass, making it both hygienic and comfortable for students to sit on or lie down. This creates a relaxed mood where students can freely exchange ideas. For the partitions and decoration, Clifton recycled wooden pellets, which gave the space a rustic feel.

To create a cosy atmosphere, Clifton transformed a mattress into a comfortable sofa and provided an unconventional form of seating with tyres. These tyres can function as both tables and chairs, and can be moved around easily so students can gather in groups of different sizes for discussions or be on their own to do some individual work.

Another highlight of the school project is the CL3 05 Learning Support Centre, a multi-purpose room for meetings and functions. It also serves as a homely environment where students can pick up skills for daily tasks, such as making breakfast and coffee.

In designing this room, Clifton focused on acquiring and upcycling many pre-loved items. Not only is this cost-friendly, it also sets a good example for students to treat items and the environment with respect. Various Coca Cola plastic carriers have been transformed chairs, which can be moved around easily with their wheels. Meanwhile, wine storage boxes were assembled into a one-of-a-kind display shelf. Clifton also wanted to create an eclectic mood for this room, reflecting the different personalities of students and staff who may enter. He did so by contrasting the rustic mood of the room with an antique Chinese table. The table was then juxtaposed against a simple but custom-made display piece containing the school’s initial made with cork boards and CDs.

“Working within your budget can be tricky when it comes to school projects, but this doesn’t mean we can’t create a good design without good budget. In fact, having this ‘disadvantage’ promotes more creativity. It also serves as a precious lesson for students to appreciate our environment more,” says Clifton.

Usually, when one steps into a unit, he or she will notice the center of the living room. The original wall, which had a sharp edge, appeared cold and rigid. Complementing the design are stand-out funiture, such as an Innermost Origami table, Knoll Bertoia Wire Chair, Magis Deja-vu Chair by Naoto Fukusawa and Kartell La Marie chair by Phillippe Starck.
Warm, concealed lighting is also used to great effect. "We spent a lot of time thinking about the lighting of the unit, and hope the effect can create a different feeling during the day and at night," said Leung.
Lighting was not a problem in the master bedroom, which had two large windows allowing natural light to enter. But it presented a different challenge: an awkward corner which made it tricky to maximize space. But by cunningly turning it into a walk-in wardrobe, Leung increased storage space and freed the bedroom for eye-catching furniture pieces, such as a Fritz Hansen Ant chair by Arne Jacobsen and a Bang & Olufsen Beloit 17 speaker.

Minimal House Design | HKET Luxe Living | Dec 2019
Proverb has it: there is no place like home. With this in mind, designer Clifton Leung took the creative reins in transforming The Lake Dragon rooftop duplex in Guangzhou China for a fashion guru who is always on the go. To create a sophisticated and elegant home which also showcases the busy homeowner’s extraordinary taste, Leung ingeniously matched traditional Chinese Siheyuan concepts with European luxury premium furniture.
The 15,000-square-foot duplex, with its rooftop and basement, has ample space to spare. Grand is the perfect word to describe the double-height living area. Leung substituted a section of the hallway wall with clear glass to help spread natural light throughout the living space, keeping the family close to nature’s heart by permitting an uninterrupted view of the garden. The designer also built a network of wooden walkways in the garden to give members of the family easy access to different areas within the property, creating an intrinsic link between the various rooms.

New Trend in Office Design| Cobo Social | Sept 2020
The ongoing trend to work from home, whether for two days out of the week or five, will likely have an impact on workplace design. Designers share their thoughts on the new trend, how it can bring about change in the layout, choice of materials, lighting and more.
“A lot of offices are designed to be open plan and I think that will be here to stay, but with partitions and more space between the desks. That will help people feel better,” says Clifton Leung, the founder of Hong Kong-based interior design firm Clifton Leung Design Workshop. “And the partitions will be made from materials that will be easy to clean and disinfect. Nothing that is porous.”
Whether we work from home or at the office, the workload remains the same. Spending long hours at work is normal and Leung hopes that increasingly offices will move away from the standard, cookie cutter looks featuring a monotone colour palette and practical furniture—an uninspiring look that is not conducive to productivity or creativity. “Especially the standard fixture of installing a false ceiling and fluorescent lighting, which isn’t a cheaper option anyway,” says Leung.

Tucked away atop of the Victoria Peak behind Hong Kong's unrelenting hustle and bustle, the residences found along Old Peak Road have been known to offer an oasis just within reach of the city. Set at the western point of Hong Kong Island, this panoramic neighbourhood boasts beautiful views over the town, hiking trails galore, and some of the city's priciest homes. Given its regarded status, it's of little surprise that those who live atop of The Peak chose to renovate rather than relocate as the years go by.
Having worked with Clifton Leung Design Workshop, ten years prior, the homeowner of the Dynasty Court Residence believed it to be time for his 1,794sq.ft three-bedroom apartment to be given a complete and total facelift. Built back in the '90s, the residence had been updated once before through Leung's services, but with a new chapter of retirement drawing nearer, the desire for a modern touch presented itself once again – this time with inspiration from Scandinavian interiors.

Organised Storage | SCMP| Jul 2015
Wardrobes are a luxury for most Hongkongers and, even when they do exist, are usually barely adequate. Designer Clifton Leung effectively doubled the space of the small walk-in closet in his own Mid-Levels home by ultilising the floor. His custom-designed series of three deep steps with lift-up plywood lids provides handy storage for shoes, bags and out-of-season clothes, while also giving access to the high, hard-to-reach shelving at the back of the closet. He added a foot-operated light switch to illuminate the closet right to its depths, and an LED strip on the first step for effect. Clifton says of his storage solution, which works well because it is so accessible.
Home Space for Work | SCMP | Aug 2011
Using kitchens to do double duty as work spaces is not a new idea, but to get it right you should be clever about it. Clifton achieved this in a Robinson Road project featuring a multifunctional kitchen countertop. He made the counter long and wide, with divided shelves underneath providing the “demarcation line”. On the kitchen side, this provided storage for cooking utensils, while facing the living room there is space for flower arrangement kit, which is always on hand and easy to stow away. By turning the space into an open kitchen, which could be enclosed by a sliding glass across the counter-top, the small kitchen becomes a more airy and spacious working area visually.
Tricks for a Quick Sale | SCMP | Jun 2009
Sellers on a tight budget could brighten a property and maximise its appeal by putting in feature lights, said Clifton Leung, president of the Clifton Leung Design Workshop. Applying a fresh coat of paint and replacing anything old or broken should be a priority. Cleaning windows also makes properties look attractive and bright. Heavy curtains should be taken down and sheer curtains put in their place, while replacing old bulbs with new or higher-voltage bulbs is an easy improvement to make. Finish with a good clean – that’s a minimal cost but can do the magic.
